In February of 1994, when it was handed over to María Elena and Darío Hilbrands, Pan de Vida had 12 children in residency. By 1996, the number of children had increased to 40, requiring more and better facilities to be able to manage more children. Pan de Vida obtained a 3 hectares (7.5 acres) of property in 2000 through donations and construction began in 2001 on dormitories, a dining hall, a school, workshops, and storage areas. All these projects were built with the help of volunteers, businesses, foundations and the Mexican state and federal governments.
At this point Pan de Vida has graduated over 100 students from elementary school, 40 from
junior high school and 15 from high school. There are 13
full-time volunteers and 20 other part-time volunteers to help care for around 110
children.
