Papua, Indonesia Outreach
Late July, 2010 (Actual Dates TBA)

Work with MAF missionaries Dick and Mary Martin, who have been in Indonesia for more than 20 years, in this rural area of Indonesia to encourage and establish local churches.  Small villages as well as larger towns will be the venue for this adventure in trusting God.   The Martin family are among our most intrepid missionaries, with lots to teach and give to those who come to serve in their nation.  MAF presents a viable option for those seeking further service, and what better place to learn more about it than serving short-term alongside their senior staff.  This outreach will present considerable difficulty in traveling and living conditions.  However, it will definitely be worth the trouble in terms of personal growth, spiritual maturity and exposure to the front lines of mission enterprise.

When our last team visited the MAF Station in Sentani, the students of "Papua Harapan School" were just arriving and the school was just getting established in a house just outside town.  Since that time, Papua Harapan School (Literally "Hope of Papua School") has gotten fully underway.  A Christian education project like this is a huge undertaking, but will also make a huge difference in rural Indonesia for years to come, as children learn early the precepts of the Lord, integrated into their education.

Here are some facts about the school:

Vision: To develop Papuan men and women with the character of God as leaders for Papua.
Mission: To disciple Papuan children in:
    1.  Godly character,
    2.  Attitudes of self-worth, cultural value, and equality with others,
    3.  Excellent academic skills in English and Indonesian, and
    4.  Habits of care for self, others, and creation.

The school 's website can be visited for more information at http:\\papuaharapan.org  There is also a facebook page for the school www.facebook.com/pages/Sekolah-Papua-Harapan/118827578622.

YCC Global Outreach is pleased to be able to participate in the foundation and on-going growth of Papua Harapan School.  Right now there are 14 children living at the school - 8 early elementary age children from the village of Pogapa, who have been at the school since Summer, 2008 - and 6 Kindergarten children from the village of Silimo, who are currently experiencing transition from village life to city lifestyle, and will begin school at Kindergarten/Grade 1 level.  In addition to these boarding students, there are 11 day students, making the total enrollment around 25 on a daily basis.  Our activities on this upcoming outreach will include:

  • Teacher in-service for PHS staff teachers. Instruction is all in English.
  • Child Care(the dorm parents might be able to take a break if we provide live in care at the dorm for a few days.)
  • Small construction or painting projects
  • Teaching-- English is part of the curriculum.
  • VBS type activities.
In addition to the activities at the school, team members will be able to accompany MAF missionaries on a "ride-along" flight to the interior of Papua and see firsthand the kind of ministry they do.  Cost for this outreach is approximately $2850.00.  Minimum age is 16.  Contact Team Leaders Erin Wallace or Becky Miller for More Details.
